Hello

I’m Arie (rhymes with faerie) (they/she) ~ a licensed tattoo artist based on unceded Chinook land (Portland, Oregon). My work is an expression of my love for all things botanical.

Flowers move me most of all. Flowers connect us to memory, to celebration, to loved ones, to ourselves, and to our place in the natural world. It's an honor to learn from the plants I draw, and even more of an honor to learn from the clients who share their connections to plants with me. Together we get to make the ephemeral permanent, for as long as we are.

My hope is to provide an experience that’s as grounding and accessible as possible for both of us. Tattooing is such a special craft, and I’m so grateful to always be learning and growing through it with you.

“But all my life—so far—I have loved best how the flowers rise and open, how the pink lungs of their bodies enter the fire of the world And stand there shining and willing—”

Mary Oliver, House of Light

Thanks so much for your interest ~ I hope to work with you soon!

Florist Tattoo is a private, appointment-only studio located in NE Portland. All bodies, skin tones, genders, orientations, and disabilities are welcome! This space is a sanctuary for me ~ and I hope it will feel that way for you, too.

~ I will respect your pronouns and chosen name.
~ I won’t comment on your body or weight.
~ I will only discuss physical traits if needed for the specific tattoo (ex. working around moles or how long a scar has been healed).
~ I will only ask about accessibility needs shared in your consent form within the context of the tattooing process.
~ I will never ask about your work unless you choose to share.

You can find more specific information in the menu below. What’s accessible and safe varies for each person ~ please email me if you have any questions.

  • General: There will only be one artist working at a time. I do my best to practice trauma-informed tattooing (influenced by workshops with Tamara Santibañez and other continued learning), though what this means varies for each individual. I check in often throughout the process, and you’re always welcome to ask questions or take a break. If at any point you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed you can pause or stop the appointment. Your comfort and safety are the top priority. I have a heating pad available or you’re welcome to bring your own. I also have herbal sparkling water, tea, candy, and Bobo’s bars to keep up your energy. You’re welcome to bring a snack or covered drink, too. The studio is inside shoes or socks only - feel free to bring your fav slippers!

Visual: The studio has privacy film on the front and back windows. The overhead and peripheral lighting is soft and warm, but a bright working light is required for the tattooing process. You’re welcome to wear sunglasses / eye-coverings.

Auditory: I play mostly instrumental / ambient music, and I’m happy to adjust the volume. My machine is on the quieter side but still makes some noise. You’re welcome to wear noise-canceling headphones during your appointment and / or request an appointment without chatting. If you have concerns about masks making communication difficult / impossible, please reach out so we can discuss a plan.

Scent: I ask that you don’t wear heavy fragrance. I use an essential oil diffuser and burn therapeutic smokeless incense. If you have any sensitivities to scents please let me know in advance. I’m happy to not diffuse / burn anything, though there will always be the smell of cleaners to eliminate blood-borne pathogens.

Allergies: If you have any topical allergies or sensitivities please let me know in your consent form with as much notice as possible so I can ensure things are safe for you.

  • The massage table is 30”x73”, on the more cushioned side, and has a max working weight of 750 lbs. Unfortunately manufacturers couldn’t provide max weight capacities for either the lounge chair in the waiting area or the side chair in the tattooing area (only occasionally used for clients) - but both seem sturdy. The lounge chair has arms and a width of 28.75” and the side chair is 21.7” without arms. There is also a sturdy 48” long wooden bench in the waiting area without arms (custom made, so unfortunately no stated weight capacity). The step stool for assistance onto the massage table has a stated weight capacity of 500lbs. If you have any concerns on furniture please let me know!

  • The restrooms are located a short distance outside of the studio. They are ADA compliant, gender neutral single person restrooms.

  • The studio is ground level, including the door (no steps or stairs). Everything is built in compliance with ADA standards with 36” wide doorways and a 34” height sink. The floor plan is open and should be able to accommodate mobility devices. There’s a step stool to help with maneuvering onto the massage table, and I’m also happy to assist if you need additional stability. If you need to stay in a wheelchair or remain sitting please let me know in advance - I’m happy to work with you to figure out comfortable solutions. The restroom is located outside of the studio a couple doors down and is also built to ADA standards. The doors to the studio and bathrooms may be heavy - I’m happy to assist! Unfortunately, parking is only available via street parking, and it may be necessary for you to traverse streets and sidewalks to approach the location.

  • Clients are required to be vaccinated and wear a mask. I always wear a KN95 and am vaccinated - including the most recent booster (fall ‘24). The ceiling is 12-20’ providing additional air space, and a HEPA air purifier will be running. My hands are washed repeatedly throughout the process. If either of us are showing any signs of communicable illness (not exclusively Covid) the appointment will not proceed. If you’re feeling unwell please cancel with as much notice as possible.

FAQ
  • Yes! All bodies, skin tones, genders, orientations, and disabilities are welcome! I’ve participated in workshops on trauma informed tattooing with Tamara Santibañez and on tattooing deeply melanated skin with Jaylind Ezili. I’m always trying to learn and grow in these areas so my tattooing practice is as accessible as possible.

I understand my portfolio is lacking in deeply melanated diversity and offer 25% off to BIPOC clients. I know it’s hard to trust a white tattooer with limited experience in this realm, and I’m always happy to do a consult, even for flash, if you just want to feel it out.

  • I’m a machine tattooer, and my tattoos are made with dotwork (dot by dot), pepper-shading, or some combination of both. I aspire to make tattoos that feel in conversation with your body, flowing with you and letting your skin show through negative space and airy textures. I tattoo in black and grey only.

Flowers and plants are my favorite and forever inspiration. Most of my tattoos are drawn by referencing photos I’ve taken. I always feel closer to understanding a plant’s form and spirit when I’ve observed them out in the world. I look for and grow plants especially for this!

I don’t do color (it’s a whole other skillset!), and I’m unlikely to do subject matter beyond botanicals (maybe shells, rocks, things from the natural world, maaaybe animals and fantasy nerd stuff) because that’s what I’ve spent my time learning how to draw and feel excited to create.

  • A few years now, still always learning and growing!

After getting tattooed often and dreaming of it for years, I started officially learning and got my license in 2019. 2020-2021 I was away due to health / covid, and I couldn’t stop thinking about tattooing until coming back in 2022.

  • I don’t typically do cover-ups as my work isn’t well suited to them being composed of lots of little dots rather than solid fill. If you’re down for a blast-over (the existing tattoo will still be partially visible below), feel free to reach out to discuss.

I can tattoo over scars that have been healed for at least two years. I’m still building skill in this realm, but it’s something I’m happy to do if you’re comfortable with that. I took a class from David Allen on mastectomy / scar cover-ups and love any opportunity to practice what I’ve learned. I have surgical scars and know how powerful it can be to change your relationship with the marks on your body and the stories behind them. It’s an honor to be trusted with work of this nature.

  • Newsletter subscribers always receive the opportunity to claim flash first, and then any available flash lives in the booking section here on my website. You’ll be able to book through Acuity, which means no need to worry about emails or back and forth on scheduling (unless you have questions).

Customs open only via newsletter. I accept limited custom appointments when I have availability and our ideas align. I’m most likely to take on projects of a botanical nature. Eager to do more sprawling, airy, large-scale work!

I typically book appointments only for the next 6-8 weeks. If you're traveling or have other time related circumstances please note it in your booking form or send me an email. I’ll accommodate if I’m able, the more notice the better!

  • Flash typically ranges from around $200-600 depending on size and complexity.

Customs will also be priced by piece (a bit higher than flash since they’re especially for you). If you’re interested in a bigger, multi-session project I’m happy to discuss your budget and set a day rate so you know what to plan for.

A nonrefundable deposit of $100 for flash or $150 for customs is required to book.

Payment is due at the time of your appointment. Card and cash are both acceptable but please know I can’t make change.

Tipping is customary and always appreciated but not required. While I appreciate the thought of gifts please only tip with cash or card if you’re inclined, thank you!

I have sliding scale spots available for BIPOC clients that will reduce the cost by 25%.

  • Leading up to your appointment:

    • If you feel sick with any communicable illness or you’ve had an exposure please let me know as soon as possible so we can reschedule. Beyond my health, illness increases the risk of infection and poor healing with your new tattoo since the immune system is already burdened.

    • Plan to come to your appointment alone unless we’ve discussed it in advance. The studio is small, so it’s not a great setup for another person to hang for hours. It also makes it harder for me to focus and do the best work I can for you.

    • Protect the area from the sun prior to your appointment! Please let me know if a burn, rash, breakout, or injury occurs in the area of the tattoo within one month of our appointment; we’ll need to reschedule until the skin has healed.

    • Keep hydrated and moisturize the area regularly starting a couple weeks before your appointment. I promise this helps the process and outcome so much!

    • Make sure you have everything you need for healing. I recommend unscented lotion and unscented liquid soap you’ve used before to minimize the chance of allergic reaction. My favorites are unscented Everyone Lotion and Dr. Bronner’s unscented baby soap. Aftercare instructions will be emailed following your appointment.

    The day before your appointment:

    • Refrain from drugs / alcohol / blood thinning medications. Stay hydrated. Eat nourishing meals with protein. Get a good night of rest if possible. All of these things can make a positive difference in your tattoo experience.

    • Don’t worry about shaving. I’ll shave the area either way, and we want to avoid razor burn!

    The day of your appointment:

    • Make sure the area is clean, don’t wear strong fragrance, and don’t use numbing cream/spray. The FDA recently issued warnings against numbing products for tattoos due to possible adverse reactions. They can also impact the outcome of your tattoo. If you're concerned about pain please let me know! We always take as many breaks as needed and use bactine (which is at the FDA approved limit of lidocaine), and we can plan for multiple sessions if needed.

    • Pack! You’ll need: your government-issued ID (if you haven’t already filled out the consent form), cash or card to pay (please note I can’t make change), a mask, and comfy slippers or socks (the studio is shoes-off). You might also want: headphones/earbuds, sunglasses/eye mask (there’s a bright working light), a book, a snack or lunch (you’re welcome to use the mini fridge), stim toys (as long as you can stay really still).

    • Avoid excess caffeine and eat a full meal with protein if you can. Again, this can make a big positive difference in your tattoo experience.

    • Wear loose-fitting clothes that allow access to the tattoo area and that you don’t mind potentially staining (ink is messy). You’re welcome to bring a change of clothes and change behind a screen or in the bathroom.

    • Plan time for parking & finding the studio. Directions are included in confirmation emails upon booking.

    • Arrive on time, not early, and not over 30 minutes late (that’s considered a no-show, and I won’t wait beyond that point). I won’t be ready until the time of your appointment, so if you’re early your confirmation email will include some nearby coffee spots you can hang at.

    • We’ll touch base on how you’re feeling and go over any questions.

    • I’lll prep the tattoo area (shaving / disinfecting).

    • We’ll play with the stencil size and position until we both feel good about it. You’ll be able to look at the stencil in a full length mirror and be given time to sit with it to be sure you’re feeling great about moving forward.

    • Then we’ll settle in for the tattoo! I’ll always check in before starting and throughout the tattoo to ask how you’re doing and if you need breaks. You’re also welcome to ask for a break to breathe, stretch, go to the bathroom, snack, whatever, at any point!

    • It’s important to stay very still during this process, but you’re welcome to any entertainment that isn’t disruptive. If there’s sound, I will ask that you use headphones so I’m not distracted.

    • I’ll follow whatever conversation preferences you note in your consent form. I love chatting and getting to know y’all, but I do ask that we don’t go into really heavy topics as I’m not equipped to be a support person and do a tattoo at the same time :) I may also be quiet if I’m trying to focus on something technical, and I’ll do my best to let you know that.

    • When we’re done you’ll have a chance to look at your tattoo in the mirror and sign off. I’ll take photos with your consent. We’ll get you bandaged up and go over aftercare. You’ll receive aftercare instructions via email as well. Then we do the capitalism part, and hopefully both leave feeling very delighted and accomplished!

  • If you cancel within 72 hours, reschedule more than once, show up over 30 minutes late, or no-show your deposit will be lost and we may not be able to reschedule in the future.

Please cancel with as much notice as possible if you’re feeling sick with any communicable illness or have had an exposure. Beyond my health, illness increases the risk of infection and poor healing with your new tattoo since the immune system is already burdened.

On that note: very infrequently I may have to reschedule last minute due to chronic illness flare-ups. Rest assured I’ll only do this if it’s the most ethical choice for your appointment as I want to give you the best tattoo possible. Thanks for understanding.

    • Try to take it easy after your tattoo, if possible. Your body is doing extra work to heal, so if you can: slow down for a few days, get some good rest, eat nourishing meals.

    • For adhesive bandages: leave the bandage on for 3 days. You may shower as usual, but do not submerge in water. It's normal for some ink and plasma to accumulate beneath the bandage. If you notice any itchiness / redness around the edges (can indicate an adhesive allergy), any open "tunnels" from the edges that allow air in, heavy accumulation of sweat, or leaking remove the bandage immediately. Otherwise, after 3 days remove the bandage in the shower with clean hands and warm running water. Pull up or down from a corner to loosen (like a command strip) rather than pulling across the tattoo.

    • For non-adhesive bandages: leave on for at least 4 hours - up to overnight, but not longer. Remove with clean hands and wash.

    • Do not reapply bandages after leaving the studio! You're more likely to trap bacteria than to keep it clean!

    • After removing the bandage wash at least twice a day with clean hands, warm water, and unscented liquid soap (not bar soap - this can harbor germs). My personal favorite is Dr. Bronner's Unscented Baby Soap, but the best soap is one you've used before to minimize any chance of an allergic reaction.

    • When the tattoo begins to feels dry (usually around 3-4 days) apply a thin layer of unscented lotion after washing. My personal favorite is Everyone Unscented Lotion, but again it's best to use something you're familiar with to minimize the chance of allergic reactions. I don't recommend Aquaphor, vaseline, or any kind of oils as they don't allow the skin to "breathe" and can cause things to stick to the tattoo.

    • Having clean towels, bedding, and clothing is ideal, especially in the first few days after removing the bandage.

    • Wear loose-fitting clothes and avoid sleeping directly on your tattoo while in the early stages of healing.

    • When showering try to keep your tattoo from being hit directly by the stream of water.

    • Especially for the first week, avoid any activities that might expose your new tattoo to heavy sweat, friction, direct sun, water (outside of showers), or potentially unsanitary conditions (things like washing the dishes, cleaning the litterbox, cuddling pets, using shared gym equipment - depending on where your tattoo is located).

    • Your tattoo may be a little swollen and red for the first few days. After a few days it will be itchy and will peel as it heals. Don't scratch, pick / pull, or touch outside of washing / applying lotion or you risk damaging it. If you notice any irritation or signs of infection after the first few days please email me right away!

    • Your tattoo should be mostly healed around the two week mark when it stops peeling (you can discontinue washing 2x per day at this point), but refrain from soaking in water, prolonged sun exposure (wear high SPF!), or tanning for a full month. Sunscreen and lotion go a long way in maintaining your tattoo over time!

    • If you have any questions during the healing process please email me!

  • Not all tattoos require touch-ups, but they’re free within one year if deemed necessary to address any issues that might occur in the healing process. Not sure? Email me a picture, and I’ll let you know (even if books are closed). You may schedule a touch-up as soon as one month after your tattoo.
